What's it about?

The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are being held in London in 2012. Godalming has a wealth of sporting talent as our annual sports awards have shown, many of whom are already internationals. We are proud of their achievements and want to help their progress to higher achievements.

Hence we are launching a fund that will give financial support to individuals with international potential with a view to setting up a second stage to assist volunteers. The Fund will operate for five years from 2007 and initially expects to be able to support up to 12 candidates (14 Grants were paid in January 2008), but this will depend upon the amount of the donations received. You must enter the scheme in 2007 to 2009 as the object is to give you assistance throughout the period on a progressive but selective basis.

What do I have to do to qualify?

Individual competitors must compete in an Olympic sport and be able to demonstrate a genuine chance of international selection. This probably means that you will currently be a representing a County or Region or competing at an equivalent level depending on your sport.

Every year each candidate will have to complete an application form which will be countersigned by your club and an official of your sport to say that you have the necessary potential. Your performance levels will be verified by your sport’s Governing Body with the assistance of SportsAid to assess whether you continue to satisfy our criteria.

New applications can only be made in 2007 to 2009. Grant payments will commence in 2008 and will be paid in January and July dependent on the date your application is approved. Applications must be received by the end of the previous November or May. Thereafter renewal applications will have to be submitted by end November for payment in January

You must live in, or be a member of a sports club or sports group in, Godalming including the surrounding villages, for example Bramley, Brook, Busbridge, Dunsfold, Elstead, Farncombe, Milford, Peper Harow, Thursley, Witley and Wonersh.

What will I receive?

If your application is successful, the plan is to make annual grant payments in July or January in 2008 and 2009 and thereafter in January as long as you continue to meet the qualification requirements. If in our view you cease to meet the qualification standards at any time we will not recover any payments already made.

The applications will be considered by a panel selected by Sport Godalming whose decision will be final. You will be judged on your performances and a realistic assessment made of your potential selection for international honours in the last year of the scheme.

The annual payments will depend upon the amount of the funds we succeed in raising. We anticipate that the fund will not be less than £25,000 and on that assumption we expect to be able to make the following grants:

In 2008 up to 12 grants of   £500  payable in January or July

In 2009 up to 12 grants of   £500  payable in January or July

In 2010 up to  6 grants of   £750  payable in January

In 2011 up to  3 grants of £1,250  payable in January

In 2012 up to  2 grants of £2,500  payable in January

If the Fund is more or less than £25,000 then the payments may be altered at the discretion of Sport Godalming.

That means that you could possibly receive up to £5,500 if you are one of the two individuals selected for support throughout the term. The grant will be decided by a panel appointed by Sport Godalming whose decision will be final.

How large is the Fund?

The original target was £25,000 which has already been exceeded in pledges or donations thanks to the generosity of the sponsors and donors listed above.

In January 2008 we shall be approaching businesses to join the gold Club by contributing £500 each towards a target of £10,000. We shall also be inviting smaller business groups and individuals to donate into the fund so that a much wider section of the community is linked to Go for Gold.

We will be hold the funds in a separate bank account and it will be used only for grants for this scheme.

Promotion of the Fund

The sponsors have been generous in financing the scheme and from time to time you may be asked to meet them and to talk about your successes.

2008 Awards

Jeremy Hunt Conservative MP for South West Surrey was guest of honour at the inaugural presentation of Sport Godalming’s Go for Gold Champions Fund awards evening at the Charterhouse Club Godalming on 25th January.  He presented cheques for £500 to 14 promising London 2012 Olympic prospects to help towards their training expenses.

The 14 going for gold are flat water kayakers Paul Wycherley (also a 2008 potential) and Matthew Welch, ace sprinter Jordan Huggins, hockey player Jenny Chetwood, fencers Nikki Barlow, Grace Stafford, Joe Sale, Toby Lee and Elizabeth Ng, 800m runner Adelle Tracey, ice hockey player Ryan Webb, discus thrower Chris Scott, sailor Mary Fenton-Jones and Commonwealth games swimmer Owen Morgan.

This quote from a parent says it all:

‘I think I speak on behalf of many when I say that I found the evening truly inspirational. From Jeremy Hunt’s speech to the citations for each of the young people, I thought it was fantastic’.

In July, Harry Carter, a very talented gymnast, was awarded a grant of £500 that was presented to him by David Anderson at his school, Rodborough, on their awards day.

The Go for Gold Champions Fund is believed to be unique and is the only scheme of its like in the country. So we are leading the way and have got our athletes off to a flying start.
