Sport Godalming Chairman's Report

Sport Godalming, Chairman’s Report. February 2010

What a great year 2009 was and 2010 will be, then 2012 to look forward to. The highlights in no particular order, except Godalming comes first, were as follows:

  • Godalming Leisure Centre finance approved. This will happen! Roger Steel, Waverley Borough Council Portfolio Holder, will speak at our Annual General Meeting to bring you up to date and take questions.
  • ‘Go for Gold’ continues to support Godalming athletes in their quest for success. Last month eight awards of £700 and four of £100 each were distributed. Check our web site for details and profiles of the individuals.
  • Sport Godalming applied for and were successful in being awarded charitable status.
  • The Godalming and District Chamber of Commerce have adopted ‘Go for Gold’ as their nominated charity for the next year and given Sport Godalming membership of the ‘Chamber’.
  • Again, a successful Sport Godalming annual bowls competition.
  • We were thrilled to welcome Peter King, former Chief Executive of British Cycling, to speak at last year’s AGM and we cajoled him back to present our annual awards last November. Truly inspirational and amazing to hear how this success was built.
  • A visit to the Olympic Park last December was fascinating. The scale of it and the organisation is impressive. Anyone can visit, just go to their web site, but I have to thank David Gill for organising a great day.
  • I visited Surrey Sports Park and was given a guided tour by  Jason Harborow, Chief Executive, and Richard Bean, General Manager. This is also a very grand and impressive project with fabulous facilities that will be open to the community. They are keen to foster a Godalming relationship, especially as we are one of their closest neighbours. I am aiming to have dates for tours of the park, which will be on our web site. We can at least look and learn.

Looking forward, we have plans to develop a legacy strategy for Go for Gold to take us beyond London to Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. We are very fortunate to be able to call upon the time and skill of Michael O’Sullivan to take a key role in developing the plan. His first project will be a Sportsman’s Dinner fund raiser later this year. The Guildford Rugby Club has plans to extend and modernise their clubhouse facilities so the inaugural event will be a joint effort to raise money for both projects.

Michael is also managing an open day at the rugby club for all Godalming sports clubs to show their offering and encourage new members. The date is May 23rd, details to follow.

I continue on the Active Waverley committee which is gradually developing and working in the background to make sure we get the best of what is available by working with Active Surrey Sports Partnership and other relevant organisations. They are working towards development of a web site which will help enormously with communication.
Surrey Sports Park will host the 2010 Surrey Sports Conference on April 15th. This is organised by Active Surrey Sports Partnership who would like to see at least one member of each club attend. Please check their web site for full details.

Finally I would like to acknowledge the support, financial or otherwise of the following organisations:

Charterhouse Club                                     The Surrey Advertiser
Waverley Borough Council                          Prior’s Field School
Godalming Town Council                             Go Godalming-GOLO
Downs Solicitors                                         Godalming Chamber of Commerce
Godalming Woolsack Rotary                       Sport Godalming Committee
Godalming and District Lions                      Webmaster- Phil Kemp

I am very proud that we have managed to establish these working partnerships in Godalming. My sincerest thanks for all that you do.

For the diary, AGM is March 25th at Holloway Hill.

David Anderson, Chairman.
