Sport Godalming Chairman's Report

Sport Godalming, Chairman’s Report. February 2011

Well, London 2012 becomes a fast approaching reality!

Sport Godalming, and partners, continues to raise cash for the 'Go for Gold' initiative in order to support our local talent with the potential to represent Great Britain at the Olympics. There is an amazing depth of local young talented athletes covering a wide variety of sports and we have continued to support some fifteen of them with varying degrees of finance. Some have already delivered medals, yes even gold, at Commonwealth Games level. Our next round of awards will be made at this forthcoming AGM, when the recipients will be available to talk of their experiences and how our support has helped.

This initiative will continue beyond London 2012 so we need to secure a continued programme of fund raising events in order to keep the momentum going to support the next batch of talented hopefuls. Please remember that this fund was started nearly four years ago with a promise of £1,000, and to date we have banked and distributed just over £30,000. No middle men, no difficult rules. What comes in goes out. Any fund raising ideas will be most welcomed and will receive our full support. This is all about our community and how well we make it work to make a difference. A great example is being set by Richard Braid, son of our Secretary Bill, who will run the London Marathon in April as a fund raiser for 'Go for Gold'. Please check our web site for details of how you can contribute. Richard will be in attendance at the AGM to talk about his effort.

Reverting to London 2012 for a moment there are a number of events being planned in the lead up to the big event some of which will involve Godalming. A strong possibility is the re-enactment of a historic cricket match here in Godalming. Keep an eye on our web site and the local press for details.

Over the past year we have continued to work with our community partners and sports clubs to secure the best possible facilities for now and the future.

The highlights in no particular order, except Godalming comes first, were as follows;

  • Godalming Leisure Centre planning has progressed and tender process finalised. This will be delivered soon.
  • The Godalming and District Chamber of Commerce adopted 'Go for Gold' as their nominated charity for last year and gave Sport Godalming membership of the 'Chamber'. The town Christmas Lights switch on was a feature event.
  • Again, a successful Sport Godalming annual bowls competition.
  • Michael O'Sullivan organised a successful 'Sport Godalming' 'Sport for All' open day at Guildford Rugby Club last May. Some seventeen local sports clubs participated. It is planned to repeat the event in May 2011 in the town centre at Burys Field.
  • Broadwater Park is an incredible asset offering a wide range of sporting, leisure and educational opportunities. I have long held the view that this asset should be protected and managed for the long term benefit of our community and to this end I have written to the resident clubs proposing an open meeting to focus on common objectives that would achieve this aim.
  • Congratulations to John Sandy, a current active committee member, on being awarded the MBE this year. A fantastic and well deserved award.
  • Active Waverley continues to develop and will be a strong strategic operation in the near future. The links with Active Surrey, Surrey Sports Board and the meetings of Chairs of Surrey Sports councils are taking shape and will develop into a strong proactive network.

A special personal thanks to David Gill and Christina Hales for their support and genuine enthusiasm for whatever we do. Teamwork at its best!

Finally I would like to acknowledge the support, financial or otherwise of the following organisations:

  • Waverley Borough Council
  • Godalming Town Council
  • Go Godalming - GOLO
  • The Surrey Advertiser
  • Downs Solicitors
  • Godalming Chamber of Commerce
  • Rotary Club of Godalming Woolsack
  • Sport Godalming Committee
  • Godalming and District Lions
  • Charterhouse Club

I am very proud that we have managed to establish these working partnerships in Godalming. My sincerest thanks for all that you do.

David Anderson, Chairman
February 2011
