Sports Godalming Sports Awards 2010

Sport Godalming held their annual awards presentation on Friday 19th November 2010 at the Charterhouse sports centre in Godalming. The evening was sponsored by Downs solicitors and notaries.

A golden fencer and a promising skier took two of the major individual honours. Hot Olympic Games prospect, Elizabeth Ng, who won a Commonwealth team gold medal, lifted the Charterhouse Club Shield after being named Sports personality of the year, and 15 year old slalom and giant slalom specialist Rachelle Rogers picked up the Denningberg Shield youth prize in recognition of her sweeping successes on the pistes around Europe.

Liz Ng, Sports Personality of the Year,
with Tim Ostle

Ng, a member of the Broadwater – based Aldershot Fencing Club, one of several of the town’s sports stars part funded by the Sport Godalming Go for Gold scheme- had kicked off her brilliant year by winning the women’s foil at the Chichester open in May, going on to captain the winning England foil team at a senior 5 nations tournament in St Albans in June.

She held off strong claims for the top award from Commonwealth Games discus thrower, Chris Scott - who was named runner up   - and England lacrosse player Sarah Taylor.

Rogers meanwhile pushed Wey Kayak paddler Charles Welch into second with Milford Pumas U16 footballer Brendan McCarthy third.

Godalming Town’s best ever season was saluted as the Wey Court footballers took the Waverley Shield for top senior sports team. The club went all the way to the Ryman Division 1 South play-off final and also lifted the Surrey Senior Cup for the first time in their 60-year history.

Guildford Rugby clubs under 12 National Braemar Cup winning side were the Go Godalming Shield youth team winners.

Shields and Trophies were presented by the Mayor of Waverley, Cllr Carole Cockburn, the Mayor of Godalming, Cllr Jane Thomson, Tim Ostle from the Charterhouse Club, Joy Poulter from Go Godalming, Chris Slyfield and Paul Marsh from Downs solicitors.

Thanks to Chris Dyke  from the Surrey Advertiser for the above and the reporting in the Surrey Advertiser and the Surrey Times. And a very big thank you to Vee Avenal for all the photographs taken on the night and reprinted here.

<photo to follow>

Rachelle Rogers is a pupil at St Catherine’s school and is an accomplished skier. She has had some pleasing results over the last 12 months and in April moved up from the Children (CH2) to Junior (JN1) age category enabling her to start competing in the adult Federation International du Ski (FIS) races.  Her debut race was in Cerro Castor in Argentina and she gained the highest debut points in the Southern Hemisphere in Giant Slalom.  She has been selected into the British Junior Alpine Ski team for 2010/11.  The FIS races are much more challenging and physically demanding, Rachelle has been fortunate to be given the opportunity to develop her core fitness and overall strength at The Charterhouse Club.

Her results are even more impressive but rather than giving you the long list that was submitted may we just say that she came first in several competitions she entered in the UK and France.

Sport Godalming Awards 2010
Guildford Rugby Club U12 team with Joy Poulter

As Simon Rhodes, co chair of the Guildford rugby club mini section, a coach of the u12s and a very proud father tells us…2010 was an extremely memorable and successful year for the Guildford under 11 side who have just become under 12. In the 2009/2010 season the team scored 107 tries and only conceded 2. After winning all their club fixtures and the Effingham and Leatherhead festival the season came to a successful climax when they became County Champions by winning the Surrey A festival. This was all the more impressive as they did not concede a try in the process.

As county champions they duly qualified for the National championships, which were held at the beginning of the season.  This tournament consisted of the County Champions of the largest mini rugby playing counties in the Country. They won and secured the Braemar Cup with a running try count of 54-0.

William Sutcliffe, Jonathan Burke, Harry Turner, William Gumpel, Ben “Boris” Bradley, Louis Edmondes, Matthew Edmondes, Jack Johnson, Tom Heyes, Sebastian Friedrich, Jamie Cotta, George Rhodes, Charlie Crawford, Miles MacDuffus, Max Texier, Edward Tristem, Freddie Impey, Jack Taylor, Ben Taylor, Zach McArthur. Club Long Service Award

Winner:  Maggs Kyte
(Guildford Hockey Club)

Sport Godalming Awards 2010
Maggs Kyte with Bill Braid

Maggs Kyte has been involved in the Guildford Hockey Club Colts for about the last 20 years. She has inspired thousands of people, young and old to be involved in hockey. When she started the junior programme was quite small with just a handful of teams. The club has now expanded and has a boys and girls team in every age group from U9 to U18. The youth sections are thriving with membership growing all the time. Maggs is an excellent coach and has run the Surrey Youth Games team for Guildford since it started and also is a lead Coach in the Surrey Junior Development programme.

Maggs is known in the club as the person who does everything. She leads on membership, fixtures, umpires and recruitment and deployment of coaches. It is very difficult to imagine how the club would run without her. She literally organises hundreds of people a week into competitive teams.
On top of the work with the colts, Maggs also does the same for the Ladies section – organising fixtures and finding available players so that all the teams can have a game. Maggs has probably worked every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the last 20 years running an amazing club with an enormous membership and most of all ensuring that everyone who wants to play can enjoy their hockey.

Godalming faced tough competition against two teams from Sutton Atlantis Swimming Club the trophy holders for the last four years, the Beacon Swimming Club from Crowborough, Tandridge Aquarius Swim Squad (TASS) and the Chislehurst Millennium Swim Squad. The win in the final squadron meant that Godalming had increased their lead finishing 1st on 255 points. Paul Molyneux (48)- Dan Broom (32)- Karl Chandler (39)- Adam Denton (46) and not to go unrecognised…. their team manager Mark Burgin, age unknown, competed in the 46RAAM 2010. This is a non stop cycle race across America. It happens every year and is regarded as the world's toughest bicycle race; they raced in the four man team category in which there were 11 other teams. They raced as Sharp 4 Prostate team to promote their sponsors and the chosen charity they were raising money for. The team race is a relay; with two people on shift and two people resting; the two people on shift rotate every 45 minutes for about 5 hours and then switch over to resting, and the rested team of 2 do their 5 hour stint; they kept up this routine for 6 days 15hrs and 7min to complete the 3000km race. The race started on the west coast of America and finished on the east coast of America. Not only did the team have to get themselves fit enough for this adventure over 9 month period; they had to raise funds to compete; put together a support crew of 9; and also raised over £70,000 for charity.

Chris and Jenny Slyfield Trophy

Winner:  Malcolm Richardson

Sport Godalming Awards 2010
Malcolm Richardson with Chris Slyfield

Malcolm Richardson is Secretary of Godalming Angling Society, a large and successful club, with some 1600 members from all over the country, and includes 150 juniors and about 100 disabled anglers.  The Club has 7 lakes and 10 miles of the River Wey, and is active in organising fishing for the disabled, youngsters and ladies, with qualified coaching for all. Malcolm has been involved in Fishery Management work since 1955 (55 years), a committee member from 1960 to 1970, Assistant Secretary from 1970 - 1975, and Secretary from 1975 to 2010.  He has also run the trout fishing section at Winkworth from 1985 - 2010.

Malcolm was the mainstay of the development of the Marsh Farm, Milford fishery from 1998 - 2010: 3 lakes, new pavilion club house and conversion of the barns.  Malcolm has been a trustee of the club for at least 3 decades.

Up until his retirement in 2000, virtually all his spare time was devoted to the club.  Since then, I get the impression that all his waking time is devoted to the club’s administration responsibilities, together with his considerable work carried out in the conversion of Marsh Farm buildings, and the day to day maintenance of the Society’s property.  He is also much involved in the coaching scheme and the “Open Fishing Days” at Marsh Farm.

Malcolm is also secretary of Sport Godalming and is on the Wey Consultative Group committee. Malcolm is a tireless worker for, and the backbone of Godalming Angling Society, and has contributed hugely to the success of the club, which is widely regarded as one of the best in the country.

Downs Award

Winner: Chris Jagger

Sport Godalming Awards 2010
Chris Jagger's representative Katherine Jonkergouw
with Paul Marsh

Dr Chris Jagger, who is known to many of you, is this year’s recipient of the Downs Award for enhancing and promoting sport in the local community. The reason Chris has been chosen for this award is because of his vision and tireless efforts in taking the virtually unusable tennis offer at Holloway Hill and turning it into a facility that the whole community is proud of. He was also the leading light in forming the Busbridge Tennis Association or BTA in short form.

Chris was a GP at the Binscombe Medical Practise for 34 years, (1973-2007). Now retired, he is still using his medical skills as a part-time specialist practitioner for the Accident and Emergency department at The Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Additionally, he is currently the chair of local charities: the Warehouse Christian Trust which includes the Cellar café in Godalming - open to everyone, providing a friendly meeting place where people with problems can meet and discuss them amongst themselves and with the staff and volunteer helpers; and also the fantastic Skillway project which aims to raise the self-esteem and motivation of teenagers through apprentice-style teaching of manual skills in Skillway’s own workshops by skilled craftsmen.

He is Chairman of Salvadorian Children’s Earthquake Trust (SALCET). He and the SALCET team have travelled out to El Salvador annually for the last 10 years providing 2 weeks of invaluable medical care to suffering children and supporting companion children’s charity clinics in El Salvador.

He is also Chair of the local Thomas Trust and is on the committee for Loseley Cancer Support Group who meet fortnightly at Loseley.
In any spare time, apart from tennis, he also participates in other sports, including windsurfing, mountain biking, waterskiing, and running. – most recently completing the Great South Run for the SALCET charity. So an extremely active man!
