KAYAK racer Paul Wycherley saluted Sport Godalming after scooping one of its top awards. The Elstead 23-year-old was named Sports Personality of the Year. Wycherley held off strong competition from a glut of the area’s stars. After receiving the Charterhouse Club Shield from British Cycling chief Peter King, Wycherley said: “It’s fantastic because it really helps recognise the successes of a lot of the younger guys. Often the older people get the adulation and this is an opportunity to keep younger ones inspired.”

Paul Wycherley and Adelle Tracey
Wycherley is also part of an elite group who benefit from the organisation’s Go for Gold Champions Fund, aimed at local stars with Olympic potential. He said: “Olympic sport is not an affluent industry so every grant goes a long way to training and equipment and all the things we need to go on and be successful.”
Another Olympic hope Adelle Tracey capped another brilliant year by doing what she does best – racing to a title. The Guildford & Godalming AC 800 metres runner was named Youth Sports Personality of the Year for a third time. Adelle – also part of the elite group backed by the Go for Gold Champions Fund - received the Denningberg Shield from former town mayor Danny Denningberg and guest of honour Peter King, the British Cycling chief. She narrowly edged out fellow Gs athlete Rebecca Dingemans, skier Rachelle Rogers (both pupils at Bramley’s St Catherine’s School) and Godalming dressage rider Lizzie Corrie.
The top youth team prize for the Go Godalming Shield went to Milford Pumas Spitfires U12s who swept to the North-East Hants League first division title with the St Catherine’s U12 national champions biathlon team second and Rodborough School’s U13 rugby team third.
Winners with their trophies
No fewer than 11 prizes were handed out in recognition of another superb year. Other winners were: Nicky Thompson (Dressage – Disabled); Witley Yamabushi Judo Club (Sport Godalming Club Excellence); Rupert Maude (Cycling Special Award); Ian Jennings (Chris & Jenny Slyfield Trophy for services to local sport); David Gill (Down’s Trophy for sports promotion).
Guest speaker was Peter King, executive director of British Cycling, who led Team GB to Olympic glory.
